2017-2018 Royal Court

It was a beautiful December day in South Florida to begin main draw action of the 2016 Junior Orange Bowl on Wednesday, marking the start of the 55th International tennis championship.

In Coral Gables, top-seeded Girls 14U player Noa Krznaric of Croatia defeated Egyptian qualifier Lina Mohamed in straight sets 6-1 6-2. Krznaric, who fell in the semifinals of the Junior Orange Bowl last year, had a strong performance in one of the morning’s opening matches.

“My opponent played very good,” Krznaric said. “The first match is always difficult. I want to improve my serve and return for the next match.”

Mohamed had endured four rounds of qualifying to reach this year’s main draw. She battled hard and tested Krznaric throughout the match, but the tall Croatian player powered her way to victory

Top-seeded Krznaric will face American qualifier Amber Fuller tomorrow. Fuller was a 6-3 6-2 winner over Malaysian Elysia Wan in round 1.

At Salvadore Park, Boys 12U American qualifier Nicholas Godsick, son of former Junior Orange Bowl Champion Mary Joe Fernandez, won an impressive first round matchup against fellow American Julian Alonso. Godsick took the match 7-5 6-2.

“I had a little bit of nerves, but it was fun. I’m definitely more excited for the next round now,” Godsick said. “I think I need to hit the ball more and go for my serve.”

Awaiting Godsick in his next matchup is top-seeded Dino Prizmic of Croatia, who defeated American qualifier Nathan Nguyen 6-3 6-3 in the first-round match. The round of 64 battle between Prizmic and Godsick will take place tomorrow at 11 a.m.

At Crandon Park for the Boys’ 14U division, Romanian qualifier Sebastian Gima defeteated Tony Huang of China 6-0 6-4.

Gima will face the top-seeded player in the division, Buyun Chaokete of China, in the round of 128 matchup tomorrow at noon at Crandon Park Tennis Center in Key Biscayne.

Finally in the Girls’ 12U, which is being hosted at the Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Center,  Denislava Glushkova of Bulgaria provided arguably the biggest upset of the day as she knocked off fellow country mate, top-seeded Katerina Dimitrova 6-2 7-6 (7-2).

Glushkova looks to continue her magical play tomorrow when she faces Argentine Solana Sierra in the round of 64.
